After I wrote the granny square tutorial, I had a flashback to when I was wearing my granny square poncho and I cringed inwardly. We all have that moment when you look back at what you wore 10 years ago and wonder…‘what was I thinking!’
Vintage patterns are particularly cringe worthy. I’m not talking about the 1930’s classy ladies in their little pearl buttoned sweaters. I’m talking about the 70’s pattern where the moustachioed male model is wearing a fully knitted suit complete with turn ups! Or the Farah Fawcett lookalike wearing a crochet dress in tie dye and matching hat. Funny pictures abound the internet and so I had a look the Museum of Kitschy Stitch and chose a few of my favourites from the selection of questionable yarn projects for an end-of-the-week giggle.
I’m sure 15 years from now, our kids will be laughing at our proud pictures of knitted garments and inwardly thank their lucky stars that we no longer knit for them. However vintage knitting isn’t always horrid and we will be looking at some beautiful examples and modern versions in future posts so stay tuned.
Please do share your funny knitted creations. I’ll be the first to proudly show off my ‘beautiful’ cape! Enjoy!
