STOCKING SOCKS
Wales has a long history of hand knit stocking manufacture, with groups of knitters
gathering for ‘Noson Weu’ a knitting evening, where stories and gossip were
exchanged, and speed knitting competitions held to entertain the knitters while they
worked. These were particularly popular within rural Wales.
It was also common to knit on the move, on walks to and from chapel and on the
way to market and anywhere else that required a long walk. The National Wool
Museum boasts a small collection of historical hand knitted stockings, and this sock
draws inspiration from these examples.
This sock is knitted from the top down starting with a 2x2 rib and featuring an
integrated heel, for a classic sock shape.
